M|Dining Catering Captain

Michigan Dining is comprised of twenty-one on-campus cafes and markets, nine residential dining halls, a line of Blue to Go foods, and the Michigan Catering unit. Our 300 professional and 2000 student employees are committed to creative, healthy, and nutritious foods, international cuisines, and sustainability throughout all dining operations.

Our Catering Captains work in cooperation with Assistant Managers, Sales and Culinary teams to oversee the Catering event from start to finish. They plan, prepare, and perform catering activities with the goal of ensuring that guests have a favorable experience.
 

What You'll Do

  • Review Banquet Event Orders (BEOs) at the beginning of each shift to confirm that events are set as contracted, including tables, A/V needs, and more, and certify that all signage follows department standards.
  • Report to Assistant Catering and Catering Manager.
  • Monitor attendance and performance, student labor, and coach customer service to ensure the Catering event exceeds the customer's expectations, handling any issues or concerns that arise.
  • Enforce University alcohol policies to ensure total legal compliance and maintain our liquor license.

Skills You Have

  • High School diploma or an equivalent combination of education and 1 year of experience in a food-related field.
  • Our Captains must become ServSafe and TIPS certified within 60 days from the date of hire as a condition of employment. Certification must be maintained as a condition of employment.

Additional Information

At Michigan Dining, our Catering Captains are invaluable resources for both our guests and our student staff. Conducting pre-shift meetings helps to fine-tune the steps of service and expectations, allowing the staff to blossom in a real-world setting and expand their networks. Captains are crucial in training our staff to present our menus inefficient and appetizing ways, but their responsibilities don't end when the events finish.

Position Criteria:
  • Knowledge of Management System modules or similar event management systems available to the industry.
  • Knowledge of spreadsheets, email, and the Internet.
  • Some institutional or commercial experience in the preparation and serving of food.

Financial & Procurement Process
  • Help ensure all money management policies (cash handling) and inventory control procedures.
  • Assist staff and oversee the end-of-shift responsibilities including cleaning event space and work areas, returning catering bar inventory, final checklists, and release of staff.

Sanitation and Safety
  • Assist the Catering management team in ensuring compliance with all state and county health department and safety regulations and maintain sanitation as a unit priority.
  • Ensure the health and safety of our guests and employees.

As a Catering Captain, you will have multiple opportunities for personal and professional growth. We emphasize training, seminars, and professional development courses as a means of expanding your skills.

Work Conditions
  • We work variable weekday hours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Current, valid driver's license issued within the United States/Canada or an international license that is translated into English for the Motor Vehicle Record Check, observing the University of Michigan policy.

Physical requirements
  • Move and transport items weighing up to 25 - 30 pounds, manipulate and gather objects, often at low heights and from awkward positions, maintain a static position for extended periods of time and ascend/descend stairs.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Salary may vary depending on the qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.
Relocation will not be offered for this position.
